Seth MacFarlane Explains Banned Family Guy Simpsons Clip

All in good fun, mostly, but last year an edited clip drew all kinds of fire from people who apparently don’t like to see Marge nearly raped or hear the entire Simpsons family shot to death. Here’s commentary by creator Seth MacFarlane, explaining the backstory of why the clip was banned on Fox.

Long story short: The Simpsons can make fun of Family Guy, but Family Guy can’t make fun of The Simpsons. Go figure. I’ve never been a fan of Family Guy, but I find it interesting that The Simpsons are too precious to be made fun of on their own network.

Wow. I have actually watched this episode and I nearly died laughing. I’ve also seen the Simpsons where they said that family guy was plagiarism, also funny. But seriously? Now yes, The Simpsons have been around longer but that really shouldn’t mean they get more leeway.

Ummm maybe it was the nature of the joke family guy used to poke fun at the Simpsons that was the problem. If you think about it, it really wasn’t a joke at all it just relied on tasteless shock humor like much of Family Guy. It didn’t match the Simpsons plagiarism jab, Mcfarlanes response was a little much i think and in bad taste.
That being said… I do enjoy both shows. Though i think as intelligent as Seth Mcfarlane is his rebuttal could have been much more clever.

I think i know why this got banned not sure but i think it’s because glen kills the simpson family but in the Simpsons they take the Mick by showing family guy in the episodes by saying peter is a clone of homer or family guy is guilty of plagiarism by being similar to the simpsons or to help keep “crude, low-brow programming”, such as Family Guy, on air by showing the family guy logo on the TV etc

MacFarlane misses the point. No one is saying that he cannot make fun of the Simpsons only that this particular “skit” was tasteless, tacky and crude and not even in a funny way. I defy MacFarlane to find an equally tacky, crude skt about “Family Guy” from The Simpsons. The sensibilities are different. Simpsons = wit, irreverence. Family Guy = ignorant, tasteless, racist humor from a boob – MacFarlane.

I gotta say, the Fox network really is the main culprit here. They are the ones that tried to stop Macfarlane when he was making a joke about the simpsons. Yeah, it was sorta crude but people found it funny. And like he said, it left the first act of this episode a little empty and short.
I agree with the lady to, if we want to save the simpsons, they have to start making great scripts, like some of the episodes last season were great.
One more thing, Macfarlane sorta has to start working on his scripts too. They are beginning to go into the same cycle the simpsons had entered in season 10. The jokes are beginning to get tired. Nice season premiere though.

Could it be the ban had less to do with your taking a jab at ‘The Simpsons’ than the EXTREME NATURE IN WHICH IT WAS DONE! One of your shows main characters seemed to rape a someone (even if Marge ended up enjoying it-perhaps tasteless on its own) and then MURDERS THE WHOLE FAMILY INCLUDING THE BABY!

Family Guy will get cancelled again before the Simpsons finally retire as the best TV show of all time. There is absolutely nothing long lasting, no legacy Family guy will leave behind. And that’s what Seth MacFarlane wants anyway. Make crude, easy, toilet humor, make a bunch of money, and then disappear. The characters are one dimensional and as soon as people get tired of the shock value type humor Family Guy lives off of, the show will be history.
You have to remember when this particular episode aired. It was two months after the Simpsons Movie came out. Poor Seth must have felt very jealous of all the attention the Simpsons were getting. Just like his show, there are no lines he won’t cross. So when the Simpsons poke fun of him, all bets are off, anything goes. His immature attitude is a reflection on today’s society with the me first and short attention span of people perfectly suiting Seth. Well, the Simpsons are too classy and will not stoop to his level. Long live the Simpsons!!!

South park on the other hand rely on brilliant stories and script there aren’t much jokes but still u will laugh at the particular scene.

So, after reading the comments supporting The Simpsons, and hearing the various “Family Guy sucks!” rants, I have concluded that there are a great deal of double standards.
This wasn’t tasteless. It was hilarious. To say that South Park can kill off real-life celebrities and characters in obscure and violent ways for no just reason other than to be morbidly humorous is quite hypocritical when at the same time you say that Family Guy is stupid for essentially doing the same thing to famous cartoon characters. South Park can kill Justin Bieber by squeezing him until his head explodes in a violent burst, but Seth MacFarlane can’t shoot the Simpsons behind closed doors?
Family Guy already has left a legacy, by the way. It’s ratings have exceeded those of The Simpsons in recent times. The show uses relevant social and cultural references in its episodes. Just as much as any other animated show. I’m not bashing South Park or The Simpsons, but honestly, the shows appeal to certain people.
Family Guy tends to appeal to artistic and creative types because of it’s random nature. The references are more obscure, and those that do their homework appreciate this humor. The Simpsons tends to appeal to those types who grew up with the series and have a more psychosocial relationship with the show, and it’s much more straight-forward with its references. South Park is simply hip. They stay up to date with modern day media stories. South Park really appeals to the present generation, and isn’t afraid to push the limit.
I like all three. Some more than others. If The Simpsons will put a poster of Peter Griffin up with “Plagiarism” written on it, they can expect to be hit back. And hit back hard.

No. It’s not the same. However, it is one-upmanship. If someone messes with your property, you hit them back harder with something bigger. That is the nature of a fearless director. You have to be able to accept the repercussions of controversial programming to be a respectable director. That is why animation has survived this era. It’s no longer a child’s game. It’s becoming something for adults. It’s one of the styles of motion picture that can involve pushing the limit without using real-life characters.
Besides, Family Guy makes references to Flintstones, Loony Toons, and other famous sitcoms and it makes it through the censors. It makes me wonder…If this would have been completely unprovoked, that is assuming that Matt Groening had never even picked on Family Guy in the first place, would this have even been that big of a deal? Or would it have just been another one of Family Guy’s random skits?
So, because it is the Simpsons, it’s a huge deal? It seems like a double standard to me.

if they really wanted to make ‘fun’ of the simpsons, they could have done that in a clever manner..For ex. In all the episodes of the simpsons, where they poked fun at family guy, It was certainly not something that made us HATE family guy..It was just plain funny…something that made us laugh..Thats it.
Having said that, I like both of them..they’re funny in their own way..The whole feud thing ain’t right.

I love how Seth says that the Simpsons can’t take a joke. Unlike other areas such as music, cinema where you can take shots and retaliate by taking things to the next level, the nature of comedy is such that by taking a joke too seriously and retorting through an over the top skit makes YOU look stupid and not the target of the intended retort.
The plagiarism poster thing was clever. And the dvd commentary here just reinforces the notion that the Family Guy staff is bitter to no end.
What’s more, many people who missed the plagiarism joke in the Simpsons because either they blinked and missed it or just flat out did not know about the Family Guy would now know about that particular plagiarism joke because of Seth’s rooftop whining. I think he like others have in the past, is trying to make a name of the biggest and the best.

Although i could see why people would want to cut it out for the raping (sorta) and murder of the family. I cant, however, understand why it would matter if it was the simpsons. I just don’t find this “joke” funny at all. It MINIMALIZES rape victims, for one small thing. The voice acting is crap, the humour is cheap, and altogether this is just plain tasteless. If Family Guy could come up with a decent jab at the Simpsons, maybe it wouldn’t have been cut.

Funny that they talk about the quality decline of The Simpsons when the exact same is being said of Family Guy. Simpsons was great in its first 8-9 seasons and Family Guy was great in its first 4 seasons. And now they’re both unfunny.

Family Guy has a huge following, so they’re doing it right; we alll know that Family Guy is The Simpson on acid, so if you don’t like it then don’t watch!
I quit the Simpsons years ago when it got repetitive– which would be sometime in the 90’s– but never miss an episode of Family Guy.

haha, well I know of one cameo in the simpsons that features peter griffin in just a short harmless non-verbal segment, so there is not a lot of contvoversy sourounding that, however family guy seemed to incorporate a more unsavory cameo to the public so that’s why numerous people demanded it to be off the air, which hopefully resolves your confusion around why family guy gets more of the criticism surrounding these cameos. Simpsons regardless of if you get the reference makes it funny. And really was your first act of your show just those seconds of shooting the simpsons?? that shows you had no real good script going on the first act, cause that joke was pretty short. I do think it was over the top, wasn’t clever, South park has made jabs at the simpsons too and those were actually funny, as much as I love simpsons, so it’s not even that. It’ not a question of “The Simpsons can make fun of Family Guy, but Family Guy can’t make fun of The Simpsons”; this censored gag shows clearly the main difference between the two shows:
Quagmire rapes Marge and then kills Homer, Marge and the three kids; it could be symbolic, but it is also very offensive and tasteless.
It is the McFarlane’s “Humor”: easy (and sometimes vulgar) gags.
The Simpsons are a bit more sophisticated: when Groenig makes fun of Family Guy, He does it in a more clever way.

As many have said, it’s not that Family Guy is making a joke about the Simpsons, it’s the manner of the joke.
I admit that Family Guy is awful and I’m not a fan of the show, but likewise current Simpsons is bad too. But, as Seth says in the commentary “they cut this joke from the episode which meant that act 1 had no jokes in it.” If your only joke in act 1 is in the form of an on screen graphic which has zero relevancy to the plot (as does most of FG’s ‘jokes’), then you have serious problems with writing. Espeically when once again it’s based around rape. Because rape is always funny, especially when we use that joke all the time!

C’mon people. You heard it yourselves. The creators of both shows are friends and poke fun at eachother to keep us entertained. Obviously they are 2 completely different shows and have 2 different audiences. The humor in both shows is different and caters for different tastes. The family guy joke was crude and the fact that it included rape and violence was the cause for it to be removed. Im sure if Homer was to rape Lois and kill Chris, Meg and Stewie then it to would have been axed. I personally hope that both shows continue to poke fun at eachother in the future.

For a couple of months I had someone on the internet hate the shit out of me. What Seth MacFarlane did reminds me of what that particular individual did. All of this hateful disgusting shitty artwork she did depicted me with implications of rape and cannibalism and murder.
And never did I stoop down to her level. I could of! I could’ve made my characters cannibalize and rape her and her characters then post it up for all to see…Especially since I draw better than her… but I DIDNT.
If this was between MacFarlane and Groening, then it should of STAYED between those. two. As an inside joke.
MacFarlane’s excuse for doing this is rather poor.
One quick second from the Simpsons doesn’t add up to 10 minutes of rape and murder. I remember seeing this on Adult Swim and first I thought it was pretty damn funny. I have to admit, the quagmire bit made me chuckle a little, but Seth went overboard when he lengthened the scene and murdered the characters on television. He should have stopped at the whole raping of Marge.
I don’t really have anything against Seth I guess I’m indifferent towards him. But some of the things he’s done makes me lose respect for him and that’s one of the cases.
If Matt never thought anything of this, then at the end of that episode I feel there should be a disclaimer stating this.
Just like disclaimers that say that “all parts of this work is purely fictional. Any person living or dead is purely coincidental.
The man who helped in the murder of Rasputin actually sued MGM over a motion picture depicting his wife being seduced by Rasputin when it was not true.
MGM still has the right but had to put a disclaimer prior to the next releases of the same film.
What I’m trying to say is Seth should start putting in disclaimers if he dares to tread on dangerous grounds such as this.
I saw some posters who posted up bullshit about South Park continually killing off icons and celebrities and getting away with it but yet Family Guy gets crucified if they do it.

Whenever I read through comments written by average FG fans, it quickly becomes apparent why FG is so huge. McFarlane writes jokes for 14 year olds and he relies on shock factor. Don’t get me wrong, I watch FG and I like the show, but I also realize that both Simpsons and SP are light years ahead in terms of writing, substance and actual intelligent humor. Some episodes of FG are really funny, but 99% of the time its some shocking and tasteless joke….and many times I find myself sickened at what I am laughing at.
It really is a matter of lowering the bar, as SP stated so well .If there even is a bar at this point. If you think a cartoon rape and then the murder of a family including infant is on par with a plagiarism joke….well, the bar may well be gone.

ok i don’t really see why there is such a big dispute over this… in one of the episodes where Brian is making fun of Seth Brian clearly says that Seth basically ripped off the Simpsons…and cmon guys they are cartoons! they are meant to be weird and obnoxious. Think back to some of the old cartoons they made(looney tunes and stuff like that)…both family guy and the simpsons basicly sum up some of the most stupid things and make them so it is funny…cant we just watch the damn shows and not take up arms to say who copied who and which is the better show? personaly i think watching family guy and the simpsons diss each other is freaking amazing mainly because it is a pointless rivalry…just remember people, THEY ARE CARTOONS MEANT TO BE ENJOYED AND LAUGHED AT.

Seriously, where are people’s brains. People are saying that this rape/murder thing is O.K. because it’s retorting against a plagiarism joke. Pretty sure that rape and murder is worse than plagiarism, and the whole argument that you hit them back harder could easily lead to things going too far. You don’t want to cross the line, which I think is rape and murder. Also, the argument that it’s not rape if the woman enjoyed it doesn’t make any sense either. Ask a woman if they would be O.K. with being raped if they enjoyed it. I doubt that most women would say they want to be raped. People on the Internet scare the shit out of me with these ideas because they don’t make any sense and are very immoral and hurtful to people such as women. There are a lot of warped minds out there from what I can tell.

I think that Seth got the heat also because of what kind of joke was portrayed in the scene. While Family Guy has made jokes about the Simpsons in the past, this one was way far off. I mean, rape, adultery, and massacring an entire family, stuff like that should not be allowed on television; that is not funny, it’s sick.

Most of the time I would side with MacFarlane but the problem I see in these gags is that it implies “no means yes” when it comes to being raped. As for the shooting, it’s not so much that The Simpson’s got whacked it’s that they were gunned down in a manner similar to the problems we have as a nation with regards to gun violence. How this interpretation escaped MacFarlane, who is a brilliant man, baffles. Should we not be allowed to portray such acts in some kind of comical manner? That’s arguable and I would be inclined to say no to that kind of censorship. Personally, I think this was in poor taste. I like both shows very much but I’m not going to agree with the content 100% of the time because I’m not anyone’s minion or yes man. No one is above reproach (that is the whole point of these shows to begin with), and that includes MacFarlane, et al.

I agree with JB “No means yes” is not something I think is funny. Rape and incest are not funny, and family guy keeps insisting it is. I haven’t watched it for years now because I just don’t want to see that stuff, plus when stewie gets brian to lick the crap off of his ass… disgusting and tasteless. That was the show I said NO MEANS NO,… plus their whole Conway Twitty number that lasted a few minutes, I mean, come on. It’s not funny, and it’s not entertaining, and country music blows. They should have done a chicken vs peter scene instead every time if they need filler.
I bet Seth missed the point of the conversation regarding censoring that because so many of us see that it isn’t funny. Family guy just aint what it used to be. At least Simpsons is able to stay away from the crude and boring stuff most of the time.
